In addition to our Chinese Medicine and western medical massage services our center also offers manual lymphatic drainage treatments (or “lymphatic massage”).
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle hands-on technique used to improve lymphatic flow in the body and aids in the drainage and decongestion of tissues. The lymphatic system consists of tissues and organs that work together in order to rid the body of toxins, waste, and other unwanted materials. This system primarily functions to transport and circulate lymph, a fluid containing white blood cells, throughout our bodies to aid in our immune response and facilitate healing. MLD is beneficial for people with lymphatic dysfunction and also for those who desire a general detoxification treatment. The practitioner uses the four strokes of the Vodder method to stimulate the superficial lymph vessels resulting in: increased rate of lymph fluid circulation, decreased swelling, increased venous return, increased overall relaxation, and pain-relief.
The treatment takes place on a massage table in a soothing room. Certain techniques require manual stimulation of lymph vessels in the abdomen, inner thighs, and armpit area. Proper draping is used to ensure privacy and comfort of the patient.
MLD has been proven effective for the following conditions:
- Pre-surgery (1-2 treatments the week before surgery)
- Post-surgery or post-traumatic injury (at least 24 hrs after surgery or trauma with physician approval)
- Chronic venous insufficiency (including varicose veins)
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Scar tissue
- Mild depression and anxiety
- Acne, rosacea, and eczema
Before your treatment:
- Do not apply heavy lotions or oils to the skin
- Do not eat a heavy meal
MLD treatment is not appropriate if you have:
- Acute infection
- Cardiac edema
- Acute bronchitis
- Acute DVT
Our licensed massage therapists with MLD certification are available for appointments 5 days a week with morning, evening and weekend hours available:
